Tigers vs Goats Rules

Tigers vs Goats is a traditional Bagchal board game. Four tigers and twenty goats are locked in a battle for survival: the tigers hunt the goats, and the goats try to trap the tigers first. The rules of the traditional game are below.

  1. A team of goats and tigers compete to take over the board.
  2. Twenty goats are available to defeat the tigers. Reserved goats can be mobilized at any empty point on the board, one at a time.
  3. Once all goats are on the board, a goat can move to any connected, empty point.
  4. A tiger can also move to any connected, empty point.
  5. A tiger hunts a goat by jumping over it in a straight line: the goat must be on a connected point next to the tiger, and the point beyond it (also connected, same line) must be empty for the tiger to land on.
  6. Goats trap a tiger by blocking every point it could step to, and every point it could land on by jumping, so it has no legal move left.
  7. If tigers capture 5 goats, the goats won't have enough pieces left to trap all 4 tigers. Tigers win!
  8. If all 4 tigers are trapped, goats win!

Difficulty levels 1-5 all use the same computer opponent: a small neural network trained by playing many games against itself, combined with a lookahead search, so its play adapts to the position instead of following fixed rules. Higher levels search further ahead and blunder less often.
