S Files Pro X saves your tabs, bookmarks and settings in a file called config.json. When a new version changes the format of that file, the app upgrades it automatically. Rarely, the upgrade fails and the settings are reset. The app keeps backups, so you can usually get everything back.
Where the settings file is
config.json is in this folder (replace <UserName> with your Windows user name):
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Packages\43158JPTGamesandApps.ShresthaFiles-AModernDualPane_pnxmbr0ydfejr\LocalState
You can also open the log viewer (turn it on in Settings if it is hidden) and click the Open Application Folder icon at its top right.
The backup files
In the same LocalState folder you may find:
| File | What it holds |
|---|---|
config.prior.json |
The settings from the previous version of the app |
config.successful.json |
The last settings file the app read successfully |
config.failed.json |
A settings file the app could not read |
More backups are kept in:
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Packages\43158JPTGamesandApps.ShresthaFiles-AModernDualPane_pnxmbr0ydfejr\LocalCache\ConfigBackups
Windows may clean up this folder over time, so do not rely on it for long-term backups.
Restore your settings
- Close S Files Pro X. The app writes its settings when it closes, so any change made while it is running is overwritten.
- In
LocalState, rename the currentconfig.jsonto something likeconfig.broken.json, to keep it just in case. - Copy the backup you want to restore, for example
config.prior.json, and rename the copy toconfig.json. - Start S Files Pro X.
If the app crashes at launch after an update
- Close the app, then move
config.jsonand the otherconfig.*.jsonfiles out ofLocalStateinto another folder. - Start the app and press Ctrl+S to save. A fresh
config.jsonis created. - With the app closed, copy the settings you need from your saved files back into the new
config.json.
Keep your own backup
Copy config.json somewhere safe from time to time, for example after setting up your bookmarks. If you edit it by hand, do so only while the app is closed; if the app cannot read the edited file, it falls back to a previous version, or to default settings if that fails too.
